The Government of Canada invests in Sheet Harbour

29 August 2008

The commercial area of Sheet Harbour will see significant improvements thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced funding totaling $500,000 for streetscape improvements along the main commercial section of Sheet Harbour which will lead to increased economic opportunities for local residents and businesses.

“This investment will revitalize the main commercial area in Sheet Harbour and will have significant economic spin- offs for the surrounding area,” said Minister MacKay “This project demonstrates our Government’s commitment and its efforts to strengthen economic development infrastructure in rural communities and improve the quality of life for area residents.”

Funding for this project will support the community’s purchase of signage, trees, pedestrian lighting and street furniture. These upgrades will be integrated into a larger municipal infrastructure initiative currently in development. The materials funded under this ACOA project will help link the community and increase pedestrian activity, while helping to create new business, tourism and cultural growth.

The Sheet Harbour Chamber of Commerce, which works to identify new economic development opportunities for the area, is leading the project. As a result of its efforts, the Community of Sheet Harbour is also contributing $343,420 to this streetscape initiative.

“The Sheet Harbour Chamber of Commerce recognizes that the area has not benefited from the strong growth of other larger urban and sub urban areas,” said Tom McInnes, President of the Sheet Harbour Chamber of Commerce. “We are pleased that ACOA is assisting in the growth and development of such a potential economic booster for the area.”

The greater community of Sheet Harbour and area has endorsed a Master Plan that, over time, would lead to improvements in both quality of life and realized economic opportunities.

ACOA’s investment is being made through the Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), which focuses on investments that lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities.

FOR BROADCAST USE:

The community of Sheet Harbour will receive $500,000 from the Government of Canada to begin the revitalization of its main commercial district. The announcement was made in Sheet Harbour today by National Defence and ACOA Minister Peter MacKay. The minister said the revitalization effort is designed to improve the quality of life for area residents and to attract new investment to the community. The federal funds will be used to upgrade the streetscape in the community’s commercial district, including enhanced sidewalks and street lighting, as well as the planting of new trees and improved signage.

Grand Opening Sheet Harbour Sidewalk/Streetscape Project

The Sheet Harbour & Area Chamber of Commerce officially declared the 2.7 kms sidewalk streetscape project open on Sunday, October 24, 2010. The event was promoted by a “Come Walk with Us” notice to all residents to come out and walk the route ending up at the MacPhee House Information Centre where a number of dignitaries addressed the large crowd.

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Defense and the MP for the area said:  “Our government is proud to invest $500,000 to strengthen community infrastructure in the town of Sheet Harbour and the surrounding communities,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Central Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.  “These improvements strengthen links between the commercial district and this community, encouraging people to enjoy all this special area of Nova Scotia has to offer.”

Transportation & Infrastructure Renewal Minister NEWS RELEASE Bill Estabrooks said: “By cooperating with HRM, we were able to upgrade our underground storm system at the same time as the streetscape project was going on,”  “That kind of teamwork is good for the province and the people of Sheet Harbour.”

Mayor Peter Kelly of the Halifax Regional Municipality said the Streetscapes project, and others to come, represent a continuing vote of confidence by government in the future of Sheet Harbour and surrounding area. “These projects not only improve the community’s safety and walk-ability, they enhance its attractiveness for visitors. This, in turn, helps generate new economic activity. ”Mayor Kelly paid particular tribute to the people of Sheet Harbour themselves. “Not content to let government do everything, residents made an impressive financial contribution towards their own betterment and that’s most commendable,” he said.

Tom McInnis, President of the Sheet Harbour & Area Chamber of Commerce thanked the citizens for their contribution and patience during the construction.  The new project has brought about an even greater pride in our Community along with a safe pedestrian route for everyone.  He said the total cost of the project was about $3.8 million.
